Patient services of the American Cancer Society provide a wide range of emotional and practical support for patients, their families, their caregivers, and their communities from the time of diagnosis to the end of the cancer experience. National Cancer Information Center and cancer.org
The American Cancer Society is dedicated to making certain everyone can access quality health information. Anyone can call toll-free 1-800-227-2345 and speak with a person who can offer cancer information as well as refer callers to resources in their community, including transportation, support groups, or low-cost or free screenings if they are available. Cancer information specialists answer calls in both English and Spanish, and translation services are available for callers who speak other languages. * Reach to Recovery®: Trained volunteers offer information and support to patients before, during, and after breast cancer treatment.
* Man To Man®: Trained volunteers offer information and support to patients before, during, and after prostate cancer treatment.
* Look Good…Feel Better®: The Look Good…Feel Better program is a free community-based national service that teaches female cancer patients beauty techniques to help restore their appearance and self-image during chemotherapy and radiation treatments.
* Children’s Camps: The Society sponsors camps for children who have, or have had, cancer. These camps, staffed by pediatric oncologists and nurses, are also equipped to handle the special needs of children currently undergoing treatment. * I Can Cope®: I Can Cope is an educational program for people facing cancer, either personally or as a caregiver. The program offers reliable information, peer support, and practical coping skills.
*Lodging: Based on availability, free or discounted rooms during treatment to patients residing 100 miles round trip or further from residence to treatment care facility. The High Plains Division also has three Hope Lodge locations: Kansas City, St. Louis and Lubbock.
* Patient Services Room: Many local offices can assist with free wigs, hats, bras and prosthesis. Check if fitting appointments are available for personal attention.
*Transportation Assistance: Based on availability of volunteer drivers, free rides to patients residing 100 miles round trip or further from residence to treatment care facility.
*Student Scholarships: Available to childhood cancer survivors ages 25 and under; must be pursuing a college or technical school degree. For more information please visit cancer.org/highplainsscholarships.
